The editor at Door County Advocate, Chuck Carlson, published in his “Editor’s View” a tongue-in-cheek piece (Make the Next Four Years Count) concerning doomsday and global warming – both being advocated by doomsayers among us …
Mark down Dec. 21, 2012, because that’s the day, apparently, when the proverbial stuff hits the proverbial fan. … Just in case you weren’t paying attention, that’s a little more than four years from now when the world as we know it will come to an end. And what really stinks is that it happens right before Christmas. Which leads to the obvious question” Do we really need to buy presents for anyone? It’s also a Friday and there’s no worse way to ruin the start of a weekend than, you know, watching the earth come to an end. …
Dec. 21, 2012, at the winter solstice, the earth will apparently suffer a disastrous “polar shift” due to the fact that our planet will line up almost perfectly with the black hole that sits in the middle of the galaxy. At least that’s the prevailing opinion among some scientists and others who study such things. Besides, the ancient Mayan calendar also says so. That calendar, apparently eerily accurate over the course of a thousand years, stops abruptly on what believers say is – wait for it – Dec. 21, 2012. There are books and Web sites detailing what’s to come on that December day … Indeed on the official Web site – December 212012.com – it’s all spelled out. … We are in a cosmic shooting gallery folks and there’s no reason to worry about it. What will happen, will happen. … As for me, I’m taking no chances. There’s a Corvette out there with my name on it.
And you thought global warming was a problem?
Article, Daily Camera, Vince Darcangelo, December 15th, 2007 …
The end is near. Well, more specifically, it’s five years from this Friday: Dec. 21, 2012 – or so the doomsayers would have you believe. Others believe we’re five years from an unprecedented spiritual awakening. … Most recently, Louisville-based Sounds True, a publisher of spiritual books, audio programs and DVDs, published the book “The Mystery of 2012: Predictions, Prophecies and Possibilities.” An anthology featuring many of the leading scholars on the topic, including Pinchbeck and John Major Jenkins, an independent researcher who has studied 2012 for more than 20 years and discussed the anthology at a Dec. 6 book signing at the Boulder Brook Store. …
Here’s what is known: The ancient Mayan long-count calendar – a calendar that spans more than 5,000 years – comes to an end on Dec. 21, 2012. This coincides with a galactic alignment in which the sun will align with the center of the Milky Way galaxy, an event that occurs once every 26,000 years, which could have potentially catastrophic consequences. The galactic alignment has the potential to create a shift in the Earth’s poles, which would cause disastrous environmental events.
Of course, at most of the sites where this apocalyptic subject material can be found, they sell something – T-Shirts and other paraphernalia that emphasizes the coming doom. Kind of like the public hanging of old, with people selling snacks and other things – just as disgusting to me, when it concerns something bad happening and someone around to make money off of it, especially an event of someone's death. It would be like selling T-Shirt, memorabilia, et cetera at someone's wake. Thank goodness public hangings are no longer the custom. Come to think of it, public or not, hangings are past history anyway. We "put people to sleep" who have been sentenced to death with a quick acting, and supposedly painless method of administering capital punishment.
But I digress …
Nicole Lefebvre, Pace Press writes …
Seven years ago, there was a mass preparation for Y2K, alleged by some to be the end of the world. … Again, we faced with the timeless question of whether our world will end or not.
The highly intelligent Ancient Mayan civilization developed an intricate calendar which anticipated the end of their Great Cycle of the Long Count – better known as the apocalypse – on Dec, 21, 2012. … Daniel Pinchbeck, author of “2012” The Return of Quetzalcoatl,” further examines the word ‘apocalypse,’ as it is falsely used to describe only the end of the world.
“Apocalypse literally means uncovering or revealing. I think the process is already under way. We’re on the verge of transitioning to a dispensation of consciousness that’s more intuitive, mystical and shamanic,” Pinchbeck told New York Times Magazine.
According to survive2012.com, the Long Count is made up of 13 Baktuns; the count keeps a continuous record of consecutive days and restarts about every 5,000 years, during which a new Baktun begins. Currently, we are in the 13th and final Baktun of the Mayan Long Count, calculated to reach completion in 2012. Despite the proposed end to be less than five years away, the general populace does not appear to be overly concerned. …
It should be noted that Daniel Pinchbeck is an advocate for the use of psychedelic substances such as LSD, Psilocybin mushrooms and peyote. This could explain his subject material.
In Turning In the Widening Gyre by Sean Stubblefield, The Student Operated Press takes on the subject at hand beginning with a Yeats quote:
“The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi Troubles my sight.”

December 21 is the winter solstice, an important occasion for the Celts because it was a time of rebirth, and the last change to feast before a hazardous winter set in. The celebration is known as Yule, derived from the Norse word for wheel – which symbolized a turning point from darkness to light as the length of night begins to shorten and the length of days increase. …

Something else I discovered is that the I Ching is a type of calendar system; The Book of Changes, with its 64 hexagrams, concerns the progression of time. The Yin and Yang symbol reflects the yearly cycle, with Yin/black as the female/lunar and Yang/white as the male/solar. The trigrams that compose the hexagrams are extensions of Yin (broken line) and Yang (solid line), depicting a process of balance and unification. 64 outcomes times 6 lines each equal 384, indicating a 13 month lunar cycle. Using a computer program assigning a date to each of the 64 possibilities, starting with when the I Ching was created, philosopher/ecno-botanist Terrence McKenna, realized that it corresponded to a pattern he describes and illustrates as a “time wave”, which ends – independently and ignorantly of the Mayans – on 12.21.12. There seems to be an almost binary nature and mathematical symmetry to it.
Implications of all these “coincidences” are stunning; the meme is too persistent, common and substantial to ignore or dismiss as meaningless or accidental.
Astrology and astronomy are not mutually exclusive, and ancient “primitive” cultures more in tune with nature understood this, as they monitored the position of stars in relation to natural planetary rhythms and cycles in order to plan their live within these patterns. For them, there was no distinction – astrology was astronomy, and no separation between Man and nature existed. … Although, we should keep in mind – and would be wise to, that endings are also beginnings. When one door closes, another opens. To the Mayan culture, life and death were intrinsically and intimately connected. For them, as with Nietzsche, Buddhists and the Samurai, to die well is to have lived well. In other words, gracefully and gratefully. … Change is an inevitable aspect in the natural order of things, and to survive we must work with it, not against it.
In William B. Stoecker's San Francisco Sentinel article, This Age Ends in 2012 on the Winter Solstice - Basically the same information, except …
The Mayan calendar isn’t in widespread use outside of Guatemala, though others are interested in revitalizing it, said Keith Prufer, assistant professor of anthropology at the University of New Mexico. He said the end of the calendar’s long cycle does not imply an apocalypse, but rather an anniversary similar to the millennium, though for a period of more than 5,000 years.
“It’s not the end of the world,” he said. …
There is an 11-year cycle between the current solar minimum and the solar maximum NASA predicts will come in 2011 or 2012.
The latter statements may be the cause of some “global warming” - assuming that it is actually something that is more than a climate cycle – just as the recent discovery of volcanic activity in a region of the glacial shelf in the area where evidence of melting has recently been occurring in Antarctica. [Yet, see the article concerning the cooling phenomenon in Antarctica, which means only where the volcano has been active is there a melting action).
Pravin Palande, writes about economic doom - The Economic Times, The Year of Financial Apocalypse May Be 5 Years Away …
… The present boom in the financial markets may come to an abrupt end in 2012, feels a Harvard University Economist Jeffrey Frankel. … He feels that markets move in from seven years of lull and seven years of boom. … 2012 is that year when there is a chance that liquidity from global emerging markets will get drained out. The last time this happened was in 1997 when the Asian market hit the peak and there was a capital flight out of Asia. Before that in 1982, Mexico faced problems after the oil price crisis that was experienced by the country which affected the world. Due to fall in oil prices Mexico suffered heavily due to loss in revenues. This backdating of 15 years takes us to 1697, which marked the end of the Mayan Kingdom. …
The New York Times Magazine, The Final Days by Benjamin Anastas, July 1, 2007 …
Steven from Arizona – a caller on “Coast to Coast AM” late one night in February – had slipped into a future reality and caught a glimpse of the devastation that was coming when the super-volcano under Yellowstone erupted. James in Omaha, on the other hand, was worried about the likelihood of a magnetic pole shift, while Rod from Edmonton had recently spoken to a member of the Canadian Parliament about the global-warming crisis and couldn’t believe what he had heard.
“We’re coming to an end time beyond anything that anybody has imagined,” Rod said with a trembling urgency. “The scientists right now, they’re not even studying the real causes. The Kyoto treaty and CO2 have nothing to with anything.”
“Coast to Coast AM” is an overnight radio talk show devoted to what its weekday host, George Noovy, calls “the unusual mysteries of the world and the universe.” … The guest in the wee hours that February morning was Lawrence E. Joseph, the author of “Apocalypse 2012” – billed as “a scientific investigation into civilization’s end” – and he came on the air to tell the story of how the ancient Maya looked into the stars and predicted catastrophic changes to the earth, all pegged to the end date of an historical cycle on one of their calendars, Dec. 21, 2012. …
…the Mayan calendar is at the center of an escalating cultural phenomenon – with New Age roots – that unites numinous dreams of societal transformation with the darker tropes of biblical cataclysm.
Carl Peterson – Polar Shift by 2012? …
Science has long speculated that the earth’s center rotates at a different speed from the crust. … Carl Peterson has stumbled upon a scientific explanation that fits with past polar shifts; and offers probable causes, timing, and local effects of the next shift. His theory complements and completes a Charles Hapgood theory endorsed by Albert Einstein, in which the poles, aided by massive ice build up, are eventually thrown by centrifugal force to the equator. … Science knows that the ice on the polar land masses continues to build up rapidly. Warmer polar temperatures actually deposit more ice and snow, now more than two miles deep in some places. A whole raft of prophesies and predictions (Cayce, Nostradamus, Hopi and Mayan Indians) points towards an event like this happening soon. …
The article with the most detailed information concerning the Mayan Long Calendar is Mayan Year of Destiny – 2012 by John Van Auken, Editor of the Ancient Mysteries Newsletter.
Edgar Cayce is probably the most famous psychic of all time, at least for the 20th century. He gave over 14,000 readings while in a trance state. He gave advice on health, dreams, business and sometimes esoteric topics such as the Akashic Records. Here is a sample:
Watch New York, Connecticut and the like. Many portions of the east coast will be disturbed, as well as many portions of the west coast, as well as the central portion of the United States. Los Angeles, San Francisco, most of all these will be among those that will be destroyed before New York, or New York City itself, will in the main disappear. This will be another generation though, here; while the southern portions of Carolina, Georgia, these will disappear. This will be much sooner. The waters of the Great Lakes will empty into the Gulf of Mexico.
Cayce also spoke and wrote about the origins of humanity and of the lost city of Atlantis. A devout Christian, he also discussed Jesus Christ and was concerned that his abilities may have been satanic in origin. Cayce predicted that the Earth’s axis would be shifted by the year 2001 and other major earth changes. It is now year 2008. Yet, he accurately predicted the date of his burial – January 5th, 1945.

He was born about 414 AD. He was a magician, wizard and a prophet. His prophecies range over almost as many centuries as Nostradamus. Merlin prophesied great political struggles leading to an apocalyptic decline in England and throughout the world: “In the twinkling of an eye the seas shall rise up and the arena of the winds shall be opened once again. The winds shall do battle together with a blast of ill-omen, making their din reverberate from one constellation to another.” “In these days the oaks shall burn in the forest glades and acorns shall burgeon on the lime trees’ boughs.” “Roost and branches shall change their places and the oddness of this will pass for a miracle.”
Both Wales and Scotland figure prominently in English prophecies. Many verses are not considered true prophecies as they do not so much predict future events as expose existing conditions – “the old virtues have passed away, vices are now triumphant, what used to be prized highly is nowadays scorned, and the like.” …
Nostradamus is probably one of the better known seers. His passages in his texts clearly described the man we know as Adolf Hitler …
Out of the deepest part of the west of Europe,
From poor people a young child shall be born,”
Who with his tongue shall seduce many people,
His fame shall increase in the Eastern Kingdom.
He shall come to tyrannize the land.
He shall raise up a hatred that had long been dormant.
The child of Germany observes no law.
Cries, and tears, fire, blood and battle.
A captain of Germany shall come to yield himself by false hope,
So that his revolt shall cause great bloodshed.
Beasts wild with hunger will cross the rivers.
The greater part of the battlefield will be against Hister.
Near the Rhine from the Austrian mountains
Will be born a great man of the people, come too late.
A man who will defend Poland and Hungary.
And whose fate will never be certain.
Nostradamus also predicted that there will be three anti-Christ individuals, the second being Hitler and …
Out of the country of Greater Arabia Shall be born a strong master of Mohammed,
He will enter Europe wearing a blue turban.
He will be the terror of mankind.
Never more horror.
In the year 1999 and seven months.
From the sky will come the great King of Terror.
He will bring back to life the King of the Mongols;
Before and after war reigns.
The war will last seven and twenty years.
The sky will burn at forty-five degrees.
Fire approaches the great new city.
By fire he will destroy their city,
A cold and cruel heart,
Blood will pour,
Mercy to none.
When those of the Northern Pole are united,
In the East will be great fear and dread …
One day the two great leaders will be friends;
Their great powers will be seen to grow.
The New Land will be at the height of its power:
To the man of blood the number is reported.
Contrary to what people say, Nostradamus did not provide a year in which the end may draw near.
Nostradamus’ full name was: Michel de Nostradamus, who was a physician as well as a prophet, and there are those who surmise that 50% of his predictions have already come true. His predictions end in the year 3797, and so there are those that presume this is the year all will end on Earth – at least life as we know it.
The specific year “2012” is not really mentioned.
